A surprising number of first-time product sellers generate a random-looking UPC, print it on their packaging, and only find out it's a problem when a retailer or marketplace rejects the listing. A UPC isn't just a pattern of bars — it's meant to be a globally unique identifier, and that uniqueness is the whole point.
Why "made up" UPCs cause problems
If you invent a 12-digit number without registering it, there's a real chance it already belongs to another product somewhere in the world. Major retailers and marketplaces check against the official registry, and a conflicting or unregistered code is a common reason listings get flagged or rejected.
How official registration works
UPCs are managed through GS1, the global organization responsible for issuing unique product codes. Registering gives you a company prefix, from which you generate your own product-specific numbers — a one-time or annual cost depending on how many products you need to cover.
Do you actually need one?
If you're selling directly to customers online without going through a major retailer's system, you likely don't need an official UPC yet — an internal Code128 barcode works fine for your own inventory and shipping. Registration becomes worthwhile once a retailer or large marketplace specifically requires it.
Using the number once you have it
Once you've registered and been issued your product numbers, you still need to generate the actual scannable barcode image from that number — the registry gives you the digits, not the printable graphic.
