Thermal printers have a reputation for being fussy, mostly because of stories about specialized POS hardware that needs custom drivers and dedicated software. A small shop's actual setup is usually much simpler than that reputation suggests.
Most small thermal printers just act like any other printer
Connected via USB or Bluetooth, a small 58mm or 80mm receipt printer typically shows up in your device's normal print menu — no special software required beyond what the printer manufacturer provides for initial setup.
Browser printing handles the rest
Once the printer is recognized by your phone or computer, printing a receipt from a web-based tool works the same way printing anything else does — hit print, select the thermal printer from the list, and it comes out formatted correctly if the receipt was designed for that paper width.
Getting the width right matters more than anything else
A receipt formatted for 80mm paper printed on a 58mm printer (or vice versa) will look wrong — cut off or with awkward margins. Confirm your printer's actual paper width before assuming a receipt layout will look right.
A test print saves a bad first impression
Before using it live with a customer waiting, print a test receipt and check that the business name, items, and total are all clearly legible — thermal print quality varies enough between printer models that this is worth a quick check.
No printer yet? A4 printing works as a fallback
If you don't have thermal hardware yet, a regular printer with standard paper still produces a usable receipt in the meantime — not as compact, but functional while you decide on a thermal printer.
