A thermal printer earning its keep at a busy counter every day rarely gets any deliberate care until it starts acting up — a small amount of routine maintenance genuinely extends how long it keeps working reliably.
Clean the print head periodically
Dust and paper residue build up on the thermal print head over time and gradually degrade print quality. A cotton swab with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, gently wiped across the head (printer off, obviously), clears this without needing any special tools.
Keep it away from direct heat and sunlight
Thermal printers and the paper inside them are sensitive to heat by design — placing a printer in direct sun or near a heat source can cause premature paper fading or affect internal components over time.
Don't force paper in if it's jamming
Forcing a jammed roll can damage the feed mechanism — turn the printer off, open it properly, and clear the jam gently rather than pulling at paper while the printer is still trying to feed it.
Use paper within the printer's rated width and thickness
Off-spec paper (wrong width, unusually thick or thin stock) puts extra strain on the feed mechanism and print head — sticking to the manufacturer's recommended paper spec avoids unnecessary wear.
Keep it clean and dust-free generally
A quick wipe-down of the exterior and a check inside the paper compartment every so often catches dust buildup before it becomes a feeding or print quality issue — a two-minute habit worth doing weekly at a busy counter.
