JPG, PNG, and a handful of newer formats all show up as options when saving or exporting an image, and it's rarely obvious which one actually fits a given situation. The good news is that the decision usually comes down to just two questions: does the image need a transparent background, and does it contain a photo or flat graphics.
Photos — people, products, scenery, anything with natural color gradients and complex detail — compress efficiently and look good as JPG, which is exactly why it's the standard format for camera photos and most photography use. It doesn't support transparency, but that's rarely needed for an actual photo anyway.
Logos, icons, and graphics meant to sit on top of other content — where you need the background to be see-through rather than a solid color — need PNG, since JPG can't represent transparency at all. The tradeoff is that PNG files are typically larger than an equivalent JPG for the same image, especially for photo-like content.
Screenshots, diagrams, and images with sharp edges and flat colors — things like a graph or a logo with hard lines — often look cleaner as PNG than JPG, since JPG's compression approach is optimized for photo-style gradual detail and can introduce visible artifacts around sharp edges and text.
More recent image formats can often match JPG-level visual quality at meaningfully smaller file sizes, or match PNG's quality with better compression. The catch is compatibility — not every platform, older device, or piece of software fully supports newer formats yet, so it's worth checking whether the specific place you're uploading to actually accepts them before switching over entirely.
Photo, no transparency needed → JPG. Logo, icon, or anything needing a transparent background → PNG. Screenshot or flat graphic with text → PNG, or a newer efficient format if your platform supports it. This covers the overwhelming majority of everyday cases without needing to think too hard about it each time.
Format choice isn't usually the difference between a good and bad result on its own, but picking the right one for the content you're actually working with makes compression more effective and the final result look cleaner.
